What Makes Shiatsu Different From Other Body Therapies?

In a world of incredible massage therapies, there’s something about Shiatsu that stands apart- I think that most receivers come to realise this following a session or two. Shiatsu is a massage by definition but it is also more than a massage in reality. It can feel like an unspoken dialogue between practitioner and receiver, rooted in deep listening, energetic awareness, and centuries of Eastern medical wisdom.

I know that many of the people who come to the clinic would like to know more about what makes it so special, so I’m sharing four key qualities in this article that make Shiatsu truly unique:

1. Rooted in Ancient Wisdom

Shiatsu is grounded in the theory and principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with its foundations tracing back to an older Japanese massage form known as Anma. Anma was often practiced by blind therapists and is known for its rhythmic pressure and rich techniques. Over time, Shiatsu evolved as a more modern expression, retaining the ancient understanding of the body while integrating Western approaches to bodywork. This fusion makes Shiatsu a deeply intuitive, yet clinically informed, form of bodywork.

2. Clothed, Comfortable, and Nervous-System Friendly

Unlike many other massage styles that require undressing and oil, Shiatsu is performed fully clothed, typically on a futon or padded mat on the floor. The comfort of this setting, combined with the calming rhythm and mindful touch, creates the ideal conditions for the nervous system to unwind. Central to Shiatsu is the aim to restore the smooth and balanced flow of Qi (vital energy) throughout the body, supporting deep rest and whole-body harmony.

3. Integrative, Adaptive, and Whole-Person Focused

Shiatsu is not a one-size-fits-all protocol. Instead, it adapts moment-to-moment to what the receiver needs. Those who have enjoyed a session know that the delivery varies and includes:

  • Gentle or dynamic stretches

  • Passive joint mobilisations

  • Acupressure techniques applied to specific points and along the meridians

  • A range of ‘tools’ from thumbs and palms to elbows, knees, and even feet

What guides the session is not a set routine, but the individual’s condition, each physical, emotional and energetic. This responsiveness is one of the many reasons clients describe Shiatsu as something deeper, like a bodywork that they’ve never experienced before.

4. Assessment-Led and Intuitive

Every Shiatsu session begins with listening, not only through words, but through touch. Practitioners assess the body through the lens of TCM, exploring the energetic condition of the internal Organs and meridians. From here, the session unfolds in response to what the body reveals- promoting ease, encouraging awareness, and offering support for whatever is present. Whether it’s relief from pain, grounding after stress, or release of emotional tension, Shiatsu meets you where you are in the moment.

In Summary, Shiatsu is more than physical therapy, it’s energetic communication, body-based support, and ancient medicine combined. It’s structured, yet deeply intuitive. Grounded, yet expansive. And for many, it becomes a space not just for healing but for reconnecting with themselves.
