The Liver Meridian: According to Shiatsu Theory

A General Overview:

Element: Wood

Quality: Yin

Paired organ: Gallbladder

Peak time: 1am – 3am

Associated Season: Spring

Growth, Expansion, Vision, and Smooth Movement:

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Liver is responsible for maintaining the smooth flow of Qi throughout the body, supporting our capacity to move, expand, create, assert and express ourselves in the world. When the Liver energy flows freely, we tend to feel motivated, creative, emotionally balanced, and able to plan ahead, realise our ambitions and express our individuality with ease. When it becomes imbalanced or stagnant, tension may appear physically, emotionally, and mentally. Stress, poor diet, a lack of or over-exercising can impact the health of the Liver.

Shiatsu practitioners often work with the Liver meridian to help restore ease, emotional balance and flexible movement within the body, mind and spirit.

The Pathway of the Liver Meridian:

The Liver meridian begins at the inside of the big toe, travels up the inner leg, passes through the inner thigh and groin, and connects with the Liver and Gallbladder organs internally before continuing upward through the torso, finishing on the lower ribcage. Due to the physical position of the meridian, Shiatsu treatment of the Liver meridian often influences the body physically in areas such as:

  • Inner legs, knees, ankles and the tops of the feet

  • Pelvic region and reproductive system

  • Lower abdomen and digestive system

  • Rib cage and diaphragm

Some people experience restricted joint movement, tension or holding along the inner legs when Liver Qi is not flowing with ease.

Physical Associations:

In TCM, the Liver governs several important tissues and systems. It is said to store blood and regulate its smooth distribution, particularly during activity and rest. The Liver also controls the sinews, meaning tendons, ligaments, and the body’s connective tissues responsible for flexibility and coordinated movement.

When Liver Qi becomes imbalanced, we may experience:

  • Headaches or migraines

  • Irritability / low or unpredictable moods

  • PMS symptoms or menstrual cycle irregularities

  • Digestive issues

  • Stress

  • Anxiety and/ Depression

  • Muscular tension

  • Abdominal bloating or distention

  • Blurred vision or “floaters” in the eye

  • Lack of ambition or direction

Emotional and Mental Attributes:

The Liver is associated with the emotion of anger, though in TCM this is understood more broadly as frustration, irritation, resentment, or suppressed expression. Healthy Liver energy allows emotions to move and transform naturally. We can experience and express anger or frustration in a healthy manner and assert ourselves with ease.

Mentally, the Liver is linked to planning, decision-making, and vision. It helps us organise our lives, generate ideas and realise our ambitions and goals. Equally to be flexible of mind, as well as body- to adapt and have the capacity to cope with stress.

The Liver Energy Asks:

Which direction am I taking in life?

What are my goals and ambitions?

How do I express myself creatively?

Can I assert myself appropriately?

Supporting the Liver Energy:

There are many ways to support Liver energy in everyday life. Gentle practices that encourage movement and release tension tend to be particularly helpful,

Some common recommendations include:

  • Yoga, Tai Chi or Qi Gong

  • Exercise and general movement

  • Slow breathing that softens the diaphragm

  • Finding time and space to be creative

  • Prioritising sleep- sleeping before 11pm

  • Time outdoors in nature

The Liver in Shiatsu Treatment:

When we work with the Liver meridian in Shiatsu treatment, not only are we easing muscular tension or physical discomfort, we are supporting the body’s natural ability to restore flow, regain perspective, and move forward physically, mentally and spiritually with greater ease. Applying massage, appropriate compression, acupressure, joint rotations, supported stretches and massage to promote relaxation and a smooth flow of Qi….

Receivers often report that they feel physically looser, mentally rested and emotionally lighter following a session.
